Veteran DPS educator and principal Kristin Tate is set to become principal of Oak Grove Elementary for the 2020-21 school year. Tate’s transfer to Oak Grove was reviewed and supported by the Durham Public Schools Board of Education in closed session on Thursday, April 9.
Tate will come to Oak Grove from Hope Valley Elementary, where she has been principal since 2016. While at Hope Valley she and her school community exceeded academic growth projections for the last two consecutive years while grounding their work in a vision and mission focused on the growth of the whole child. Tate served at Hope Valley as an assistant principal from 2011 before becoming principal. She has also been an academic coach for Hope Valley and Y.E. Smith Elementary, and began her educational career teaching third grade at Y.E. Smith.
Tate has an Ed.S. degree from Jones International University, and an MSA from North Carolina Central University. She is enrolled in doctoral studies at Gardner-Webb University.
A search process for Hope Valley’s next principal, that will include staff and family input, will begin this year.
