Coronavirus Update (3/3/20)
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) has announced the first positive case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in North Carolina, in an individual from Wake County (https://www.ncdhhs.gov/news/press-releases/north-carolina-identifies-first-case-covid-19). The discovery of a case of COVID-19 in North Carolina was to be expected. Durham Public Schools and the Durham County Department of Public Health are continuing to work very closely together to prepare for, monitor, and respond to COVID-19 in accordance with our pandemic prevention and response plans. DPS is following the lead of our state and local public health officials. As of today, March 3, NCDHHS has not recommended that healthy students and staff avoid school. However, as always, we encourage students and staff who are ill to stay home and get better. We also encourage students and staff to practice excellent hygiene: frequent hand washing, covering your mouth when you sneeze or cough, and cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces.
NCDHHS provides the following guidance for schools: https://www.ncdhhs.gov/divisions/public-health/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19-response-north-carolina/covid-19-colleges and for individuals and families: https://www.ncdhhs.gov/divisions/public-health/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19-response-north-carolina/individuals-families.
