Congratulations to J.D. Clement Early College High School, one of only two schools in North Carolina named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education!
The Early College, located on the campus of North Carolina Central University, was one of 362 public and non-public school honored this year and was named an Exemplary High Performing School.
“As principal, Dr. Gloria Woods-Weeks has built a culture of teamwork, rigor, inclusion, and high expectations,” said Durham Public Schools Superintendent Pascal Mubenga. “Year after year, 100 percent of her students graduate. I am so proud of Early College’s students, teachers, and staff.”
“We are honored and humbled by the recognition,” said Dr. Woods-Weeks. “We are focused and intentional with everything we do. I give all the credit to my staff. They work hard for students day-in and day-out.”
The mission of the Josephine Dobbs Clement Early College High School is to expand learning opportunities for students, to offer a rigorous curriculum that includes college courses potentially leading up to two years of college credits, and to provide in-depth support for students in those rigorous academic classes. The school was named in honor of the first Black woman on the board of education, the board’s first female chairperson, and a county commissioner.
