Durham Public Schools has been monitoring the state Department of Public Instruction’s decision to adopt “Istation” as the state’s diagnostic reading tool for students from kindergarten through third grade. We join our peer school districts in the North Carolina Large District Consortium in requesting an implementation delay.
Our schools rely on these kinds of diagnostic tools to help our teachers understand our youngest students’ reading abilities. Early literacy is vital to our students’ success. We are carefully reviewing whether Istation would adequately meet our students’ needs—and we are exploring our options and the associated costs if we determine that a different tool is needed.
