UPDATES: Emergency Dismissal at Durham School of the Arts

mpact Zone of 4/10/19 Explosion

  • UPDATE 4/11/19 - 3:00 pm
Thorough inspections show that Durham School of the Arts campus buildings are safe and secure following yesterday’s gas explosion at 115 N. Duke Street. However, extensive street closures for the emergency recovery operations in the neighborhood mean that DSA will have to remain closed on Friday, April 12. Access to the school building remains extremely limited. Transportation planning is underway to determine the best time to reopen and the best way for students and staff to arrive on campus. Durham Public Schools hopes to reopen DSA on Monday, April 15, for either a half or full day, but we will confirm whether that schedule is possible on Friday. We continue to thank the emergency responders and recovery personnel who are working to support our school community. NO MAKE-UP DAYS WILL BE REQUIRED.

  • UPDATE 4/10/19 - 1:56 pm
Counselors will be available tomorrow at our Staff Development Center for DSA students and staff from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. The Staff Development Center is located at 2107 Hillandale Rd, Durham, NC 27705.

    Durham School of the Arts

  • DSA Dismissal Announcement 4/10/19 - 10:38 am
Good morning, DSA families. There has been a gas explosion in a building near DSA. Our students and staff are safe in place at the school; there have been no injuries at our school. We are dismissing school early under the guidance of emergency responders. Buses will be bringing students home as soon as possible on their standard bus routes and we are sending student drivers home. Students who ride the car to school may be picked up at the Trinity United Methodist Church parking lot. Any students who do not have a parent at home and cannot be released from the bus on their own will be taken to the Brogden Middle School auditorium for reunification with their parents. Please do not attempt to come to our campus, as emergency responders have blocked access to the area. We will keep you informed of any further developments.
