Announcement regarding May 1, 2019

May 1

As of Monday, April 8, Durham Public Schools has 568 teachers who have put in for leave on Wednesday, May 1, representing approximately a quarter of our teaching staff.
On a typical day in May, DPS has 213 teachers absent. We are able to muster approximately 167 substitute teachers on such a day. At this time, given the lack of available substitute teachers and the likelihood of more requests for personal leave, it will not be possible to have adequate student supervision or instruction on that date.
Therefore, Dr. Mubenga has determined that Wednesday, May 1, will be an optional teacher workday. Materials will be shared with school-based coaches and administrators to provide for the facilitation of professional learning in grade-level PLCs or staff meetings. Professional development will also be provided for staff members in the operational services division.
As with inclement weather days, staff may take leave, come to work, or otherwise make up the time in consultation with their supervisors.
No make-up date: DPS currently has two remaining days of “banked” time to meet state requirements for the amount of time students spend in the classroom during the instructional year, and May 1 would have been an early release date. For those reasons, the district will use banked time rather than using the April 18 workday to replace the May 1 early release. Many district employees have already made plans for this teacher workday and securing adequate substitute teachers at this time would be very difficult.

DPS School Nutrition Services staff members will be on-site at these locations to prepare and serve meals in the cafeterias. All meals will be free for all students.
- Breakfast will be served from 7:30 am to 9:30 am: a muffin, Nutri-Grain bar, fruit juice, and milk.
- Lunch will be served from 11:00 am to 1 pm: turkey and cheese or ham and cheese sandwich, chips, fruit juice, fruit cup, baby carrots, Rice Krispie treat, and milk.
