  • Hillside High School Legacy Weekend featuring "Swing School"

    Description: "Swing School" is a celebration of Hillside's past, honoring Mr. John Gattis, a long-time educator at Hillside High School. We will also pay tribute to Hillside's alumnus and former editor-at-large of Vogue magazine. There will be a legacy luncheon this weekend as well hosted by Hillside alumni. All of this in celebration of Black History Month.

    Description:
     Students will compete for the title of —Black History Month Quiz Bowl Champion on Friday, February 22 at 1:00 in Lakewood Elementary School’s Auditorium. Participants of this event will have competed and won in their respective classroom Black History Month Quiz Bowls. All students received a 10-page packet highlighting the achievements, contributions, and general stories of African Americans to both study and memorize for a chance to win the title of Black History Month Quiz Bowl Champion!

    A Black History celebration will be a celebration of African American Culture over time.   Our students will recognize and inform the community of a culture that's rich with history, through dance, art, acting, and music.

    Description:
    BlackArt Durham is a celebration of black history, culture, and traditions at Durham School of the Arts. The event takes place on Saturday, February 23rd from 11-2:30. The event has two parts: In the morning, there are opportunities for students, staff, and families to discuss issues of race and equity in a community forum event hosted by the student group, Young People Unite. The afternoon features a demonstration of student talent that includes music, dance, and poetry in Weaver Auditorium. We look forward to sharing in this powerful moment of fellowship with the DPS family.

    Description:
    The CMS Drama Troupe, in partnership with the Fine Arts department, will present Black History performances to celebrate Black Historians from the past and present. The event will feature student talent and performances through drama, song, dance, music and spoken word. We will operate on an Early Release Schedule to ensure ALL students can participate in this event.

    Description: As part of our Black History Month celebration this year, Club Boulevard Elementary will take part in the National African American Read-In. This is an event sponsored by the Black Caucus of NCTE to promote fiction or non-fiction works authored by African Americans. We have invited Black leaders from our community to read a book, poem, or speech that celebrates African American culture to our students for the Read-In. We are hosting a number of public officials from the Durham community and our school district, as well as other community leaders and parents from our PAAC (Parents of African American Children) branch of the PTA. These esteemed leaders will read a book written by an African American in each of our classrooms and also talk with students about their career.

  • Cultural Heritage Celebration

    Description:
     Join us for an evening celebrating the history, music, and culture of African-Americans and Hispanic-Americans. Our scholars will celebrate their heroes in character as they tell the stories of their lives and the journey that it took for them to be great Americans.

    Description: 
    Parkwood Elementary School will host the 1st Annual African American Read-In on February 28th from 8 am to 9:30 am. We are going to serve refreshments from 8:00 am to approximately 8:30 am and begin the read-in promptly at 8:45 pm. Established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month, the National African American Read-In is the nation’s first and oldest event dedicated to diversity in literature. Every year, during the month of February, schools, churches, libraries, bookstores, community and professional organizations, and interested citizens are urged to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month by hosting an African American Read-In. Hosting an event can be as simple as bringing together friends to share a book or as elaborate as arranging public readings and media presentations that feature professional African American writers. We will focus on reading books that are written by African American Authors, that are age appropriate, or books that are written about African American people.

  • Imagine the Possibilities: Exploring Careers with Durham's Black Professionals and Business Owners

    Description:
    Come celebrate Black History Month with Creekside Families. This event is open to the community and will include, interactive exhibits from black professionals, performances by local dancers, performers, and artists, food from black-owned food trucks, vendors and student work.

    Description: Our Black History Program will be on February 28th, 2:00-3:30 PM. Students will perform songs, skits, dances, poems, etc, Performances should be between 2-3 mins each. We appreciate the phenomenal African Americans that we talk about every year during Black History Month. This year, we would like to shed light on African American figures that students have not been exposed to. (Politicians, Athletes, Inventors, Artists, Doctors, Scientists, Astronauts, Sororities, and Fraternities, Poets, etc.) There will be a living museum portion of 5 exhibits during the program. Students in Lower and Upper Elementary have the opportunity to research an African American and bring him/her to life during the program.
  • Live Wax Museum

    Description:
    To commemorate Black History Month, we will be hosting a Live Wax Museum. Each 2nd Grade student will research a historically African American figure who has made a positive contribution. Students will present their projects through a poster and dress up session on February 28th beginning at 8:30 am in the Spring Valley Cafe.

  • A Celebration of Black History

    Description:
    We will celebrate with music, activities, and a gallery walk of influential African Americans. This will be the culminating activity in a month-long partnership with readers coming to read to different classrooms celebrating African Americans.

  • Black History Month Celebration

    Description:
    Each morning 5th-grade students share a fact about Black History over the intercom with our morning announcements. In the classrooms, teachers are incorporating a Black History lesson into their plans and displaying the student work in the hallways.

    Black History 360 is part of Brogden's year-long "BMS 360" initiative, which celebrates various themes and topics across disciplines. Black History 360 will be a celebration of black culture through film analysis, text analysis, and guest speakers.

  • Night of Black Excellence

    Description:
    Neal Middle School presents its second annual Black History Month program. We will have vendors ranging from those who sell clothing and accessories as well as fitness and extracurricular activities for the entire family. During the event, families will also be able to participate in a drumming exhibition, food, prizes, all hosted by 97.5's own Dion "Showtime" Chavis. The night is one to remember so be sure to get there early.

  • Black Migrations through Performance

    Description:
    The theme for Black History Month 2019 is "Black Migrations". Each morning during morning announcements, students hear a Black History Moment that explains an aspect of the black migration story, particularly focusing on the 20th century. Teachers receive the information in text and additional visual that they may use for discussion in classes. On February 28, we will culminate the month with our schoolwide assembly including performances by students from our music program where they have been studying various genres of music including, for example, Mississipi Blues vs. Chicago Blues which fits into the historical context of the migration story.

  • A Celebration of Black Excellence

  • Jordan High School Black Student Union Presents: Black Excellence

    Description:
    This event will showcase talent, history and a wealth of excellence that the African American community has to offer. Students will be inspired by community members as well as students from JHS. The school's step team and African Dance team will perform and the men of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated will perform as well. Students will recite poetry and the program will be hosted by members of the JHS Black Student Union.
