DPS Announces New National Board Certified Teachers

Eighteen Durham Public Schools teachers achieved certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in 2018, placing DPS among the top 30 districts in the nation for the total currently employed with the district, according to the NBPTS.  The list will continue to grow as Durham Public Schools ranks fifth among North Carolina school districts for the number of National Board candidates in progress.

Achieving this certification is no simple accomplishment. On top of their responsibilities in the classroom, these teachers reflected on their teaching abilities, built portfolios of their work with students and the broader learning community, and sat for rigorous assessments of their content knowledge. It was hard and stressful. And when it was all over, many of their families were happy to have them back in one piece!

National Board Certification is built upon rigorous, performance-based and peer-reviewed standards based on multiple measures. The state’s NBCTs move to a new salary schedule upon achieving National Board Certification, resulting in a 12-percent salary increase.  The state also grants full licensure renewal to all teachers completing the National Board Certification process, regardless of achievement.

More than a decade of research from across the country confirms that students taught by National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) learn more than students taught by other teachers. Estimates of the increase in learning are on the order of an additional one to two months of instruction and the positive impact is even greater for high-need students.

The newly certified teachers are:

Alicia Butler, Club Boulevard Elementary
Caitlin Donovan, Durham School of the Arts
