Schools Recognized for PBIS Programs
Eighteen Durham Public Schools were recognized for their Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) programs at the November 13 North Carolina School Boards Association annual conference in Greensboro.
Burton Elementary was recognized as an Exemplar School, Carrington Middle and Spring Valley Elementary were recognized as Model Schools, and Bethesda Elementary, Hillside High, Hope Valley Elementary, Holt Elementary, Little River K-8 School, Fayetteville Street Elementary, Mangum Elementary, Merrick-Moore Elementary, Oak Grove Elementary, Sherwood Githens Middle, R.N. Harris Elementary, Sandy Ridge Elementary, Rogers-Herr Middle, Southwest Elementary, and C.C. Spaulding Elementary were all recognized as Green Ribbon Schools.
Each of these schools was recognized for where they are on implementing PBIS. The broad purpose of PBIS is to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and equity of schools.
PBIS is a school-wide system of support that is a proactive way to define, teach and support appropriate student behaviors to create positive school environments. This approach provides a continuum of positive behavior support for all students whether they are in the classroom, hallway, buses or any other place within the school.
There are three levels of support. Tier 1 supports are universal, Tier 2 supports are targeted at groups, and Tier 3 supports are individual systems of support that improve personal, health, social, family, work, and recreation for all children.
