DPS chooses new senior leader to champion equity and opportunity for all students
Durham Public Schools announced today the creation of a new leadership position charged with ensuring equity in educational opportunities for all DPS students regardless of race or ethnicity.
Dr. Daniel Kelvin Bullock will serve as DPS’s first Executive Director for Equity Affairs. He will serve on the school district’s senior staff and report directly to Superintendent Bert L’Homme.
“Dr. Bullock is an experienced teacher and administrator with enormous respect in Durham,” said L’Homme. “He has always led from whatever position he has held in DPS to fight for equity for all of our students. We are making a commitment that equity affairs will always be at the forefront of our decision-making as a district, and that minority students will always have a champion at the table.”
The Executive Director for Equity Affairs position will be responsible for:
- Developing plans for increasing educational equity and researching other districts that have succeeded in narrowing opportunity gaps for students of color,
- Delivering professional development for teachers and administrators focused on anti-racism, anti-bias, multiculturalism and cultural relevance,
- Collaborating with DPS departments to analyze data and address areas of inequity,
- Building and making effective use of community partnerships,
- Developing a system of accountability for eliminating inequity, and
- Working to secure sources of additional grants and funding to increase equity in DPS.
Dr. Bullock began his DPS career as a social studies teacher at Hillside High School in 2005. He has served as a curriculum specialist in social studies since 2012. He earned his Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from North Carolina State University in 2013.
