Schools closed to students May 16

Due to a large percentage of teachers taking personal leave on that date, Durham Public Schools will be closed to students on Wednesday, May 16. It will be an optional work day. As with inclement weather days, staff may take leave, come to work or otherwise make up the time in consultation with their supervisors.

No make-up date: There are no viable dates available for making up the May 16 school day: district policies discourage the use of Saturdays, making up the date on Memorial Day is unadvisable, and the state’s calendar law will not permit us to extend the school year by a day. Because our schools will still meet the minimum number of instructional hours required in the school year, there will not be a make-up date.

Student testing: We are making alternative arrangements for Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams that are scheduled for May 16. AP examsfor English Language and Composition have been moved to May 23 and for Macroeconomics have been moved to May 25, both at their original locations. The IB examscannot be rescheduled; we are therefore partnering with North Carolina Central University to host the exams for those students. Transportation will be provided to the IB exams; we will provide details to those families soon.

School-provided meals: DPS will be able to provide meal services on May 16 through an extension of our summer feeding program at the following 13 schools:
