New Board Leadership Takes Office
Just before the Independence Day holiday, two new members of the Durham Public Schools Board of Education were sworn in and another two were elected chair and vice chair by their peers.
With their families beside them, District Court Judge William A. Marsh III swore in Xavier Cason and Steve Unruhe to begin their service on the school board on July 1. Cason represents Consolidated District B, while Unruhe holds the at-large seat.
Also, Consolidated District A representative Minnie Forte-Brown was re-elected to a fourth term this year. She was unable to attend the July 1 organizational meeting in person, but participated by telephone and was formally sworn in the day before.
The organizational meeting also produced new leadership for the school board, with Mike Lee (District 1) unanimously named chair and Natalie Beyer (District 4) unanimously named vice-chair.
Members of the Durham Public Schools Board of Education are elected to four-year staggered terms. The county is divided into four districts. Four members each represent a single district, two members each represent two consolidated districts, and one member represents the county at large.
