Community Partner & Volunteer: Duke University Retiree Outreach (DURO)
DPS is fortunate to have community organizations and businesses that support our students and staff by providing resources and opportunities in academic achievement. Our Community Partner of the Month is Duke University Retiree Outreach (DURO), which partners with Lakewood Elementary. Volunteers Connie Winstead and Margaret Hodel, co-chairs of DURO, are regulars at Lakewood and have been volunteering for a combined 18 years!
Through DURO, dozens of retired physicians, nurses, professors, staff assistants, housekeepers and administrators complete special projects that benefit Lakewood Elementary School. DURO projects at Lakewood include: Backpack Buddy Program, school garden, academic assistance, book donations, school beautification and health and wellness activities.
When asked why they have remained involved for so many years, Connie says, “The staff, students and families are so appreciative. Lakewood has become a second home and I feel like a grandma with lots of grandkids.”
We thank DURO for being wonderful volunteers to Durham Public Schools.
