Dr. Alvera J. Lesane will join the Durham Public Schools leadership team as its next assistant superintendent for human resources. The DPS Board of Education approved her appointment by Superintendent Pascal Mubenga at its work session on Thursday, Nov. 5. Dr. Lesane will succeed Arasi Adkins, who departs DPS in December.
“I’m excited that Dr. Lesane accepted our invitation,” said Dr. Mubenga. “We had several outstanding candidates, but Dr. Lesane’s specificity and focus on ethics, innovation, and customer service won us over. She will continue the strong work Mrs. Adkins and our HR professionals undertook to reduce teacher turnover and increase our hiring of Latinx and Black teachers and staff.”
Dr. Lesane previously worked in Durham Public Schools from 2006 to 2010 within the HR department as Senior Director of Professional Growth and Development, where she supported the full-time mentoring program, led academies for assistant principals and aspiring principals, and oversaw district-wide professional development. She has spent the bulk of her career in Iredell-Statesville Schools, beginning as a social studies teacher and rising as a principal and chief of quality assurance. Since 2010 she has been the associate superintendent of human resources for Iredell-Statesville Schools.
Dr. Lesane earned her doctorate in educational leadership from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
