Forest View Student Places 5th in State National Geographic Bee
Forest View Elementary fifth-grader Keb Sills has always enjoyed geography and learning about different countries. And that certainly helped him while competing in the North Carolina State National Geographic Bee last month.
Sills placed fifth in the state competition and was the only elementary student to place in the top 10. He was also the only DPS student to qualify for the state competition and out of 100 qualifiers only nine elementary students – the rest all from middle schools. While it is the fourth year in a row that Forest View has sent a representative to the state Bee, Sills is the first to place in the top five!
“I didn’t really expect to get so far in the competition,” said Sills. “I think I just got really lucky.”
Sills has had the opportunity to visit many of the countries he was tested on. Thanks to parents that have jobs that require international travel, he has been all over the world and has even lived overseas in both Sweden and Costa Rica. While he couldn’t narrow down his favorite country to visit, he did say that he like the food in Turkey the best.
Sills will attend Githens Middle School next year as a sixth grader and hopes to continue to compete in the National Geographic Bee.
