Our November Student of the Month is Sophia Francesca Lazo from the City of Medicine Academy.
Lazo is a senior at CMA known for building a sense of community and relationships inside and outside of the classroom. Her teachers describe her as someone who finds satisfaction in showing love and appreciation for others and is unfailingly kind.
At CMA, Lazo is a member of the Health Occupations Scholars of America (HOSA) club, and serves as a tutor for other students.
Upon graduation, Lazo plans to attend either NC State or UNC-Chapel Hill and major in biomedical engineering or biochemistry and would like to earn her Ph.D. She hopes post-graduation she can find a job that allows her to continue learning and explore her field of choice, as well as provide her with opportunities where she may educate and help others.
“I am motivated by my family, who have inspired me to work hard and pursue my passions,” said Lazo. “I am also motivated by my passion and love for learning. I love being able to explore my interests and learn more about the world around me, and I take satisfaction in seeing the projects I have worked hard on come to completion.”
“Sophia is one of those students who always tries to bring others together and is always willing to help,” said CMA teacher Ms. Teebah Tah. “I can always depend on her to get the job done. We needed tutors and she immediately organized a group of students to tutor.”
We are extremely proud of Lazo’s commitment to her community and to her peers at the City of Medicine Academy. The Durham Public School Board of Education is looking forward to honoring her during the upcoming board meeting on Thursday, Nov. 19.
