Picture Day
Say, "cheese!" Photographers from Strawbridge Studios will be on site on Friday, October 4, to take fall photos. These are the photos that will be included in the yearbook, and students are only photographed from the shoulders up. For the best price, you'll need to prepay for fall photos, though you can wait and order online once pictures come back for a slightly higher price. Go to www.strawbridge.net and enter online code FM456558 to prepay for fall photos. Makeup picture day will be Wednesday, December 11 (NEW DATE), for those who miss picture day on October 4, and for those who would like retakes. All students will have the opportunity to be included in the yearbook, even if they miss both picture days.

Practice Lockdown Drill
I would like to inform you that Sandy Ridge will conduct a practice lockdown drill this week. DPS schools are required to have at least two lockdown drills each school year. The purpose of these drills are to help students understand what to do in the event a lockdown is ever needed on our campus.
Panorama Survey
I would like to remind you about the upcoming SEL survey for all students, which gives them a chance to tell us how well they understand their social and emotional skills. The survey focuses on social-emotional learning because building social-emotional learning skills is an important goal for our schools. Over the next several weeks, students and teachers will participate in several exercises to better understand these concepts. For several years, we have administered this survey designed to give students a chance to reflect on these skills.
The survey will be administered at Sandy Ridge between Tuesday, September 24, and Monday, Wednesday, October 16, 2024. To access a sample of the Panorama SEL Survey, K-2 click here, 3-5 click here.
September 1, 2024
We hope that your first week of school has been successful and productive as ours has been in the school building. We appreciate the efforts of our families, students, and staff. Thank you for your patience with our carpool line.
Holiday
Please be reminded that there is no school on Monday, September 2. We hope you enjoy your Labor Day.
mClass Testing
The mClass beginning of the year testing window is approaching and testing will begin on Tuesday, September 3. mClass is a universal screener that measures the development of reading skills of all students in K-5.
iReady
The iReady beginning of the year testing window will also open this week. Students will be given the assessment over the course of the next three weeks. iReady is a web-based adaptive diagnostic assessment and instruction program. It assesses students’ reading and math skills. The diagnostic assessment identifies which students are experiencing difficulties with specific skills, providing real-time, actionable data and reports to guide teachers in effective intervention. In addition, i-Ready provides intuitive resources for targeted instructional support.
Carpool Reminders
- Ensure that your car tag is hanging and visible to staff daily.
- Please remain in the same lane and do not switch lanes.
- Please remain in your car during carpool and retrieve your child from the loading zone.
- Please refrain from parking in the front of the school at the end of the school day.
- If you arrive early, before 7:15, please stop and wait behind the stop sign.
- Once your child’s name has been called, we would like to request that you pull up to the color coded loading zone to retrieve your child.
- Please take an active role in assisting us with protecting instructional time in the afternoons by allowing students to complete a full school day. Students who are checked out early in the afternoons miss imperative instruction and are at risk of truancy related matters. Transportation changes should not be made after 11:00 and students may not be signed out after 1:45.
- If your child walks home from school, please contact your child’s teacher and they will be given a walker tag. All walkers will be dismissed with bus riders and walk home from the back parking lot. No cars are permitted in the bus lot during afternoon dismissal.
- Please be prepared to experience longer wait times in the event of inclement weather and early release days.
Thank you for following our carpool guidelines and ensuring safety for our students, staff and families.
Bus Reminders
As a reminder, Bus 118 has a double load. The second load is scheduled to leave campus between 2:55pm-3:05pm.
August 25, 2024
We are so excited to begin the 2024-25 school year! It was so great to see so many families during Open House last week. We are looking forward to this being a great school year! During Open House, we distributed fewer carpool tags than we have in the past. This may be attributed to becoming a neighborhood school. However, if you were unable to get a carpool tag and your child is an afternoon car rider, we will ensure that you receive a carpool tag this week.
All families are welcome to walk their students to their classrooms on the first day of school. Kindergarten families are welcome to walk students to their classrooms the entire first week of school. As a reminder, kindergarten students will stagger in this week. To adhere to safety protocols and protect instructional time, families are not permitted to walk students into the building during the school year. I would like to request that all families remain in the car during am/pm carpool. This will also improve traffic flow. Old Oxford Rd is usually a very busy highway in the morning, so you are encouraged to consider making a right turn out of the school parking lot in the morning to reduce your wait time. Traffic flow is important, and we would like to encourage you to pull up to the curb and line your cars up accordingly. Once your car comes to a complete stop, students will unload from the passenger side of the vehicle. We would like to discourage students from exiting the driver’s side of the car because this presents safety issues. In the event that this does occur, your child will be escorted around the car by an SRE staff member.
Special accommodations have been made for Pre-K student drop off and pick-up. All Pre-K families are welcome to park in the staff parking lot and walk your children up to the media center each morning. Pre-K student pick-up will be located in the same location. Only Pre-K students and siblings can be picked up and dropped off at the media center. We are working diligently to ensure that every aspect of Sandy Ridge is exceptional, so I would like to request your assistance with this matter. All students will be grouped outside according to grade level in the front of the school in a designated area. Please hang your carpool tags and have them visible during pm carpool.
Morning carpool drop-off is from 7:15-7:40. This will give students time to get breakfast and report to class on time. Breakfast and lunch are free for all students this school year. Instruction will begin promptly at 7:45. Students who arrive after 7:45 are considered tardy. If you arrive after 7:45 you will need to park your car and walk your child to the front entrance and sign them in.
Lastly, in the afternoon, we will also have a designated staff member call student names to make students aware that their grown-ups have arrived. Again, it is important to have your carpool tag visible to staff daily. Once the name has been called, the student will stand in the color-coded loading zones.
Please see ways you can assist:
- Ensure that your car tag is hanging and visible to staff.
- Please remain in the carpool lane and follow traffic. (There will be someone directing traffic)
- Please take an active role in assisting us with protecting instructional time in the afternoons by allowing students to complete a full school day. Students who are checked out early in the afternoons miss imperative instruction and are at risk of truancy related matters. Transportation changes should not be made after 1:15 and students may not be signed out after 1:45.
Ultimately, our goal is to conduct a safe dismissal plan that will be time-efficient and effective. We appreciate your assistance with the implementation of this plan. Thank you for the shared commitment to the safety of Sandy Ridge students.
Respectfully,
Dr. Hinton
Principal

Unpaid Meal Balances
Recently, we have had an increase in unpaid lunch balances. Letters will be sent home to families this week for all students who have an outstanding lunch balance. Please see information included about how you can pay for meals.
Paying For Meals
Students who receive reduced-price lunch or who buy their lunch can pay for meals using the online meal payment portal: http://www.k12paymentcenter.com/ You will need to know your child’s student ID number, also known as the PowerSchool ID, to set up your account. (If your child receives free lunch, you do not need to pay for lunch.)
The online payment portal allows you to:
- Pre-pay for meals or pay as you go
- View your child’s purchases (meal history)
- View your balance
- Set up automatic payments
- Receive alerts when your pre-paid balance is low or you have past-due payments
- Go to “Manage Profile”
- Click “Send Low Balance Notification”
Student Attendance
Student attendance is vital to the academic success of our students. This is a friendly reminder that students should not be checked out of school the last 30 minutes of the school day. Truancy has become a concern at Sandy Ridge because we have several students who have missed multiple days of school. Letters will be sent home this week if your child has multiple unexcused absences. Please submit notes that you have that will potentially excuse any absences that your child may have obtained this school year. Thank you for your support with this.
POP Celebration
We are looking forward to celebrating our STARs academic growth, positive behavior, and attendance on Friday, March 22, during our People on Point celebration. Students who have exhibited good behavior during the third quarter will attend the MVP Clubs on Friday afternoon. Families are welcome to attend the POP Awards celebration. Apex Fun Run
This week we have the Apex team at school teaching the students leadership lessons like being proactive to get things done, finding healthy ways to resolve conflict and work it out, and pausing for a reality check to stay true to who they are. Ask your child what leadership lesson they learned today! The Apex team is putting on a huge event on March 21, to celebrate everything they learn and the money we raise!
Students are aiming to get pledges from 10 sponsors to help raise money for the school, and they are earning thank you gifts for their pledges. On average students complete between minimum 26 and maximum 36 laps with 36 being the most they can get credit for. So if a pledge is made for $1 per lap the donation should be around 30 dollars. To donate, please check out your student’s “Apex VIP Badge” that was sent home earlier this week. All instructions are inside. Just go to www.myapexevent.com and use your student’s special “access code” printed on their VIP Badge to log in and enter your pledges. If you cannot find your code, just email info@apexleadershipco.com. This helps the school and helps us keep track of pledges. Thanks so much and have a wonderful day.

We are looking forward to having the Apex team at school teaching the students leadership lessons that will charge our POWERS and master five habits that will unleash the power of leadership! Tomorrow we will have our kick-off pep rally, so look for your child to come home excited with an “Apex VIP Badge” (pledging information). This year we are raising funds for Community Engagement, Teacher Appreciation and Support, Student Celebrations, Continued Advocacy to SRES Families and so much more!

Females and Allies Excelling More in Math, Engineering, and Science (FEMMES+) is an educational outreach program for students in 4th-6th grade. The program aims to empower females and other underrepresented individuals in the STEM fields. The goal of FEMMES+ is to give all students regardless of their race, gender, ethnic background, etc. an engaging experience in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. By using a diverse body of Duke student volunteers, we hope to demonstrate that anyone can excel in these fields. Through hands-on engaging activities, students are able to learn in a supportive environment. We hope to build our participant’s confidence in their academic skills and to empower them to pursue their dreams.
In this 5-week after-school program, volunteers will work with a small group of students and guide them through hands-on activities and introduce them to both basic and advanced chemistry, biology, physics, engineering, and mathematics concepts. The programming will occur in-person at the school.

Carpool
I would like to say thank you to all of the families for doing such a wonderful job with following carpool expectations. This is a friendly reminder that no students can be picked up from the main entrance following dismissal except through the carpool line, so please remain in your vehicle and follow the line to pick up your student(s). We are working to keep our students safe. We would also like to reduce outgoing afternoon traffic from the staff parking lot, which causes delays in the carpool line.
Early Dismissal
We have noticed a peak in early dismissals. As you know, we value and strive to protect instructional time daily. Instruction begins at 7:45 and ends at 2:15. Please be mindful of picking students up early on a consistent basis.
Beginning of Grade Testing - 3rd Grade
The BOG3 reading test establishes a baseline measure of beginning third-grade students' reading skills. Students who score an achievement level 3 or higher on the BOG3 reading test demonstrate reading proficiency appropriate for third-grade students, which satisfies the requirements of the Read to Achieve legislation. Third grade students will take the BOG3 on Thursday, September 7. Please make your best effort to ensure that students get plenty of rest and are present and on time for school.
mCLASS Testing
mCLASS is a universal screener that measures the development of reading skills of all students in grades K-5 through two main assessments: Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) assessments. The mCLASS testing window will open next week. All K-5 students will begin their beginning of year assessment on Monday, September 11.
iReady
iReady is an online program that helps students in reading and math. It helps determine students' needs, personalize instruction, and monitor their progress. The iReady assessment window will open Wednesday, September 6.

Apex Fun Run
Thank you to all of our families that have contributed to our Fun Run fundraiser! You are greatly appreciated! We have the Apex team at school teaching the students leadership lessons like how to be fearless when things are hard, how to adapt to new situations, and how important it is to care about our effort in all we do. Ask your child what leadership lesson they learned last week! The Apex team is putting on a huge event on April 21st to celebrate everything they learn and the money we raise!
Students are aiming to get pledges from 10 sponsors to help raise money for the school, and they are earning awards for their pledges. On average, students complete between a minimum of 26 laps and a maximum of 36 laps, with 36 laps being the most they can get credit for. So, if a pledge is made for $1 per lap, the donation should be between $26 minimum - $36 maximum dollars. To donate, please check out your student’s “Apex VIP Badge” that was sent home earlier last week. All instructions are inside. Just go to www.myapexevent.com and use your student’s special “access code” or QR code printed on their lanyard to log in and enter your pledges. If you cannot find your code, just email info@apexleadershipco.com.

National Assistant Principals Appreciation Week (April 3-7)
In celebration of National Assistant Principals Week, I would like to take a moment to recognize our amazing assistant principal, Mr. Cooper. He has made a positive impact on the lives of our students and staff. He is an exceptional leader and we are grateful to have him as a member of the Sandy Ridge family.
National School Librarian Day (April 4)
In addition, April 4 is National School Librarian Day. I would like to say thank you to Ms. Dunn for everything that she does to promote the love of reading. She has played a huge role in helping our students learn important facts about Black History and Women’s History. We are thankful to have her as a member of the Sandy Ridge family as well.
Book Fair & Change Drive
I’m excited to announce that our book fair will be held from April 6-14!
It’s Book Fair time again—which means it’s CHANGE DRIVE time again! Last fall, we raised over $800 as a school and made sure that EVERY STAR could get a book from the Book Fair. What an incredible thing!! Back then, the winning class earned a cookie decorating party from me (Ms. Dunn). This go around, we’ve upped the ante a bit! Each grade level will compete together—which means that everyone in the winning grade level will get the prize—and it’s sure to be one of their favorite experiences all year!
So, what is the prize?
The winning grade level will get to duct tape our VERY favorite assistant principal, Mr. Cooper, to the wall!!
So start digging through those couch cushions, and your STAR could get this amazing experience of bonding with their classmates—and literally BOND Mr. Cooper to the wall (temporarily, of course! He’s such a great sport.)
Have you gone cashless (I have--mostly!)? Not to worry—you can add your kiddo’s “change” directly to our Starlight the Book Fairy e-Wallet by following this link: https://shop.scholastic.com/ewallet/fund?lang=en_US&walletId=e997d44a-0563-4832-835a-e87d71a8abf2. Once you load your funds, email me at Rachel_dunn@dpsnc.net to let me know your kiddo’s name and grade level so that I can make sure to properly attribute the funds to the right grade level and student! (The wallet says “1st grade,” but don’t worry—the funds in the Starlight the Book Fairy’s eWallet can benefit any STAR of any grade level. They just make me pick one. J)
Email me at Rachel_Dunn@dpsnc.net if you have any questions! How much can we raise for our STARS???

Morning Drop Off
We have noticed an increase in the number of families dropping their students off in the staff parking lot in the morning, and this is a safety concern. As a reminder, only families with students in Pre-K should park in the staff lot to walk their students up for drop off. We will be distributing special car tags to these families to allow them access to the staff parking lot in the morning. All other families will be required to utilize the carpool line for drop off. Staff members and/or Safety Patrol members assist with the car line each day until 7:45 a.m. If there is no staff or Safety Patrol member there to open your car door, this means your student is tardy. Please park and come inside the front office to sign them in. Thank you for your help in ensuring that all students are able to enter the building in the safest manner possible.

Our staff is working diligently to ensure the safety of our students every day. This letter is to inform you of the drill conducted today. There are a few areas that we will work together to improve. Therefore, we will make plans to conduct another practice drill soon. Please know that we will continue to take every measure to ensure the safety of our children. Thank you for your continued support of Sandy Ridge.

Carpool
I would like to say thank you to all of the families for doing such a wonderful job following carpool expectations. This is a friendly reminder that no students can be picked up from the main entrance following dismissal. We are working to keep our students safe and to reduce outgoing afternoon traffic from the staff parking lot.
Early Dismissal
We have noticed a peak in students being signed out of school early. As you know, we value and strive to protect daily instructional time. Instruction begins at 7:45 and ends at 2:15. Please be mindful of picking students up early on a consistent basis. I hope you enjoy the remainder of your evening and we will look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.
Beginning of Grade Testing- 3rd Grade
The BOG3 reading test establishes a baseline measure of beginning third-grade students' reading skills. Students who score an achievement level 3 or higher on the BOG3 reading test demonstrate reading proficiency appropriate for third-grade students, which satisfies the requirements of the Read to Achieve legislation. 3rd grade students will take the BOG3 on Thursday, September 7. Please make your best effort to ensure that students get plenty of rest, are present, and on time for school.
mCLASS Testing
mCLASS is a universal screener that measures the development of reading skills of all students in grades K-3 and select 4th grade students through two main assessments: Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) and the Text Reading Comprehension (TRC) assessments. The mCLASS testing window will open this week. All K-3 students will complete their beginning of year assessment between Tuesday, September 6th and Thursday, September 22.
August 28, 2022
We are so excited about beginning the 2022-23 school year! It was so great to see so many families during Open House. We are looking forward to this being a great school year! During Open House, we distributed over 200 carpool tags.
We are planning to make special accommodations for kindergarten families and students this year. All kindergarten families are welcome to walk their students to their classrooms on the first day of school. There will be staggered entry for kindergarten, so this will apply to families who have students beginning on Tuesday as well. Pre-pandemic, we allowed all families to walk their students into the building for the first week of school. However, in order to adhere to safety protocols, we are no longer permitting families to walk students into the building. I would like to request that all families remain in the car during the am/pm carpool. This will also improve traffic flow. Old Oxford Rd is usually a very busy highway in the morning, so you are encouraged to consider making a right turn out of the school parking lot in the morning to reduce your wait time. Traffic flow is important and we would like to encourage you to pull up to the curb and line your cars up accordingly. Once your car comes to a complete stop, students will unload from the passenger side of the vehicle. We would like to discourage students from exiting the driver’s side of the car because this presents safety issues. In the event that this does occur, your child will be escorted around the car by an SRE staff member.
Special accommodation has been made for Pre-K parent drop off and pick-up. So all Pre-K families are welcome to park in the staff parking lot and walk their children up to the media center each morning. Student pick-up will be located in the same location. We are working diligently to ensure that every aspect of Sandy Ridge is exceptional, so I would like to request your assistance with this matter. All students will be grouped outside according to grade level in the front of the school in a designated area. Please hang your carpool tags and have them visible during pm carpool.
The morning carpool drop-off time is 7:15-7:40. This will give students time to get breakfast and report to class on time. Instruction will begin promptly at 7:45. Students who arrive after 7:45 will be considered tardy. If you arrive after 7:45, you will need to park your car and walk your child to the front entrance and sign them in.
Lastly, in the afternoon, we will also have a designated staff member call student names to make students aware that their parents have arrived. Again, it is important to have your carpool tag visible to staff daily. Once the name has been called, the student will stand in the color-coded loading zones.
Please see ways you can assist:
- Ensure that your car tag is hanging and visible to staff.
- Please remain in your car during carpool and retrieve your child from the loading zone.
- Please refrain from parking in the front of the school at the end of the school day.
- If you arrive early (before 7:15), please stop and wait behind the stop sign.
- Once your child’s name has been called, we would like to request that you pull up to the color coded loading zone to retrieve your child.
- Please remain in the carpool line and follow traffic. (There will be someone directing traffic)
- Please take an active role in assisting us with protecting instructional time in the afternoons by allowing students to complete a full school day. Students who are checked out early in the afternoons miss imperative instruction and are at risk of truancy related matters. Transportation changes should not be made after 11:00 (9:00 on Early Release days) and students may not be signed out after 1:45 (11:45 on Early Release Days).
Ultimately, our goal is to conduct a safe dismissal plan that will be time-efficient and effective. We appreciate your assistance with the implementation of this plan. Thank you for the shared commitment to the safety of Sandy Ridge students.
