News from the Principal (09/16/2020)

Hello SRE Families,

This is a friendly reminder that K-5 students will continue with assessments this week. We would like to request that parents refrain from assisting students with completing these tests. It is imperative that we receive accurate data, which will support individualized instructional planning and the opportunity to appropriately track your child’s academic growth throughout the school year.

We are living in extraordinary and unprecedented times. We appreciate everything that you are doing to support virtual learning. We are certain that you have made many sacrifices to ensure your child’s academic success. As you are aware, sometimes using technology can present challenges for many. Below you will find a few guiding principles for online learning. Please take the opportunity to read and discuss these expectations with your child so that we can continue to set high expectations for our learners, create successful opportunities, and promote improved student achievement.

 SRE Virtual Learning Guiding Principles

  • Students will strive to complete all classroom assignments, activities and test independently. (Students are encouraged to ask questions or seek technical support as needed)
  • Students will work in a designated area that is conducive to learning
  • Students will follow school rules and expectations
  • Students will strive to adhere to daily classroom schedules and routines
  • Students will only use the chat to ask or respond to questions as directed by teachers (please be aware that the chat feature has been disabled in some virtual classrooms)
  • Students will have all necessary materials available for class (books, paper pencil, art supplies, etc.)

Please refrain from disciplining your child on Zoom. In the event that your child needs to be addressed, we encourage you to ensure that your camera and microphone are off.

DPS has updated their Notification Of Directory Policy And Opt-Out Rights form to include the option for parents to opt-out of having their student(s) recorded via Zoom or any other DPS-sponsored online video conference platform. Only complete the online form HERE if you DO NOT WANT your child included in live classroom recordings. Please note that if you opt out of this category of information, your child may not be able to fully participate in virtual class sessions held via online video conference platforms. If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Al Royster at

Sandy Ridge Family and Friends,

We would like to thank you for your continued support and commitment to ensuring that our students are present daily.  We are closely monitoring attendance and making a conscious effort to contact families of those who are missing instruction. Please feel free to reach out to our Sandy Ridge family if you need additional support.

Devices and Hot Spots

Our staff has worked diligently to ensure that all students have the devices they need for remote instruction. Hotspots were delivered on August 31. We would like to accommodate all requests. However, devices are limited and will be distributed based upon our list of families who made requests during the last distribution. All parents who completed the survey and did not receive a hotspot during the 2nd deployment were placed on a waiting list. All families who were placed on the waiting list have been contacted individually. If you are in need of a device please email

We are proud to announce that over 88% of our students have logged into Canvas for instruction.  This would not be possible without your ongoing support!  Our goal is 100% and we are looking forward to seeing our numbers increase daily.

After assessing our enrichment block, we have collectively decided to simplify the way students access their enrichment classes.  Enrichment teachers will visit all K-2 classes during their scheduled time daily. Therefore, students will not be required to leave their regular class session to attend enrichment.

Wellness Wednesday

This is a friendly reminder that participation in Wellness Wednesday is an expectation for all learners. Each Wednesday students are required to do the following:

  1. Star Studio - Students will login to their homeroom class at 7:45 a.m. for a mini lesson and attendance.
  2. Choice Board - Students will visit their Canvas platform and choose an activity to complete.
  3. Exit Ticket - Students will complete this following their choice board activity.

*Morning Counselor Meetings and Afternoon Social Worker Meetings are available for interested students.
