Downtown Mural Project

Downtown Mural Project

Sandy Ridge art teacher, Martha Murphy, worked with select 5th grade students to create public art at the American Tobacco Campus on Saturday, November 17. In Ms. Murphy’s class, students worked to complete a project on color, the value scale, and abstract design. Students used what they learned to create a "re-imagined" color wheel on three large cement blocks in Downtown Durham.

What do our students have to say about creating something lasting for the community of Durham?

“I want to express my feelings when I’m painting or drawing so everybody can see the emotions that have been put into the mural.” -Kayla

“My favorite art is to build or draw something. It makes me feel happy.” -Tavion
