Report Cards and Parent-Teacher Conferences

1st Quarter report cards will be distributed on November 9th.  The Durham Public Schools’ report cards will feature a new format, but will continue to summarize the various academic standards covered during the first quarter.  We encourage all families to reach out to their child’s teacher after reviewing the report card.  You may set up a parent-teacher conference by contact your child’s teacher. If you have difficulty reaching your child’s teacher, please contact Ms. Suarez, our Family Liaison, at 560-3952.

Spanish parent-teacher conferences will be November 14th, 15th, and 16th.  Parents should receive a conference invitation in their child’s folder this week. Parents may contact Ms. Suarez if they do not receive an invitation or would like to reschedule.

School Improvement Grant Funding

Merrick-Moore is in the third year of our School Improvement Grant. This grant allows us to focus on student achievement and improve academic programs over the next three years. Some of the innovative ways we are using this award at Merrick-Moore include:

  • A brand new Family Center on Merrick-Moore’s campus which features parent resources, a conference center, computers, parent books, and is run by our Family Liaison, Ms. Suarez.
  • Thousands of dollars worth of instructional resources such as classroom libraries, take-home libraries, Empowering Writers curriculum, Journeys texts, and Dreambox.
  • New Chromebook carts (30 computers each) for every grade level and specials team that students have access to on a daily basis.
  • Outdoor classrooms, science lab materials, a climbing wall, soccer fields, and a basketball court.
  • A four-week summer camp “Mountain to Seas” and after-school programming opportunities for students.

We sincerely hope your student has enjoyed the new resources and opportunities provided by our exciting grant.

Academic Celebrations

Finally, we want to celebrate Merrick-Moore’s incredible academic progress over the past two years. In 2017, we increased our school’s letter grade for the first time since grades were released in the 2013-2014 school year! We’re proud that we maintained that letter grade this year, while increasing our school’s proficiency level by 8 percentage points (27% increase in one year). This brings our school’s proficiency increase over the past two years to 13 percentage points (52% increase over two years) – which is one of the highest increases in the Triangle!

Our growth index for the past two years has been in the top 25% in the state and we’re identified as an “Exemplar” School Improvement Grant school by North Carolina’s Department of Instruction. Our K-2 students increased their reading proficiency level by 33%!  We’re also proud that with your support and your children’s hard work, we’ve cut suspensions by almost 50% in two years.

Despite the unprecedented progress, Merrick-Moore has been included on the state’s “low-performing” list. This designation is automatically applied to schools based on certain academic criteria. We are working tirelessly to continue our phenomenal progress, and we appreciate your support as we continue to make Merrick-Moore the pride of Durham.  For more information on how we are working to improve every day, our School Improvement Plan is available to the public at our website: www.merrickmoore.dpsnc.net.

Thank you for the opportunity to work with your child every day.  We are looking forward to having a wonderful 2nd quarter at Merrick-Moore.

Respectfully,

Matt Hunt, Principal
