Graduation Letter

Greetings SCS 2024 Graduates & Families,

As we are preparing for graduation on Friday, June 7th at 3PM at Southern High School, we wanted to make sure that everyone was up to date on the most current information regarding graduation. More information will be released as we get closer to graduation, however, now is the time to review the bag policy, review the listing of prohibited items, order graduation tickets and share ADA information (if applicable). Please note that extra tickets are not guaranteed and will be offered on a first come first served basis. Keep the following information/dates in mind:

-List of Prohibited Items

-Graduation Ticket Order Form *deadline to order extra tickets is May 24th,

(ONLY graduating students can order tickets using their DPSNC email account)

-ADA Information- If ADA seating is needed for guest, please add those names where listed using the Graduation Ticket Order Form.

-Ticket Distribution Day: Monday, June 3rd by 2pm

-Senior Day @ Falls Lake & Yearbook Signing : Wednesday, May 22nd (report at 9am Big Gym)

-Senior Walk & Cap N Gown Distribution: Thursday, June 6th @ 9am (report at 8:30am in cafe)

-Extra Ticket Distribution Date: June 6th 

                  -Graduation Rehearsal: Thursday, June 6th @ 4:45PM at Southern H.S. (report at 4:20pm)

-Graduation: Friday, June 7th @ 3PM (graduates must report to Southern H.S. at 1PM)

Mientras nos preparamos para la graduación el miércoles 7 de junio a las 3 p.m., queríamos asegurarnos de que todos estuvieran al día con la información más actualizada sobre la graduación. Se publicará más información a medida que nos acerquemos a la graduación, sin embargo, ahora es el momento de revisar la política de bolsas, revisar la lista de artículos prohibidos, pedir boletos de graduación y compartir información de ADA (si corresponde). Tenga en cuenta que los boletos adicionales no están garantizados y se ofrecerán por orden de llegada. Tenga en cuenta la siguiente información/fechas:

*la fecha límite para ordenar boletos adicionales es el 24 de mayo

(SÓLO los estudiantes que se gradúan pueden pedir boletos usando su cuenta de correo electrónico de DPSNC).

Información sobre la ADA- Si se necesitan asientos según la ADA para los invitados, agregue los nombres que aparecen en el formulario de pedido de boletos de graduación.


-Día de distribución de entradas: martes 3 de junio

-Día de último año y firma del anuario: miércoles 22 de mayo (reporte a las 9 a.m. en el Big Gym)

- Distribución de caminata y gorra y bata para personas mayores: jueves 6 de junio a las 9 a. m. (presentarse a las 8:30am. en la cafeteria)

- Fecha de distribución de entradas adicionales: 6 de junio 

- Ensayo de graduación: jueves 6 de junio a las 4:45 p. m. en Southern H.S. (informe a las 4:20 p.m.)

-Graduación: viernes 7 de junio a las 3 p. m. (los graduados deben presentarse en Southern H.S. a la 1 p. m.)

    All graduates should wear full regalia for their school including but not limited to, gown, cap, and tassel. Please contact your school if you have any questions regarding regalia and regalia orders for your school. 


  • Gowns Neatly pressed (use a cool iron or hang up in a bathroom to allow steam from the shower to help the wrinkles fall out). Caps Worn straight on the head, the top of cap should be flat, parallel to the ground Please note that decorated caps will not be permitted.  Tassel Worn over the right temple before a student graduates.


    The faculty and staff of Durham Public Schools want to make your graduation a most memorable experience. We ask for your full cooperation with the dress code for graduation. If you have any questions as to the appropriate dress for the occasion, please check with your principal. 


  • Any students, due to extenuating circumstances or extreme hardship, who cannot acquire an item necessary to meet the dress code requirements, should discuss the situation with your school’s graduation coordinator and/or principals prior to graduation rehearsal.

  • Acceptable Graduation Attire: 

  • Dress pants/slacks (no jeans) with a white dress shirt or blouse

  • Dress tie or bow tie (if applicable)

  • Skirt with a white dress shirt or blouse

  • Dress


  • Additional Details:

  • Dark shoes or neutral shoes (no topsiders, boots, bedroom slippers/fuzzy slippers, or athletic shoes)

  • CAUTION: Heel height should be comfortable for brisk, safe walking up and downstairs. Flat shoes or wedges are recommended.

  • Dark dress socks and neutral hosiery (if applicable)

  • Small stud earrings (no dangling jewelry)

  • No jeans

  • Decorated caps, purses and/or book bags will NOT be allowed in the procession.


  • Children age two and under who will remain seated on the lap of an adult for the duration

of the graduation ceremony will not require a ticket. Children over age two and those under age two who will require their own seat need to have their own ticket. 

  • Seniors should remain quiet at all times and should not get out of line at any time. 

  • Balloons, noise makers, and signs are prohibited. 

  • No gum is allowed. 

  • Seniors will graduate in alphabetical order by last name. 

  • Marshals will direct seniors when to stand and when to walk to the stage. 

  • Seniors should stand and sit together as a row. 

  • When crossing the stage, seniors will pick up their diploma cover from a table.  

  • After receiving your diploma cover, continue to walk across the stage and smile at any dignitaries who may be on stage with you. Go down the steps and return to your seat. 

  • Remain standing until everyone from your row has returned to your seat. 

  • After everyone has received their diploma cover, the Superintendent will declare you graduates of Durham Public Schools. At that time, all seniors will turn the tassel on their cap from the right to the left. 

  • Junior Marshalls will direct you.
