Communications Regarding COVID Protocol Updates

 

Following the State of North Carolina's retirement of the StrongSchools NC Public Health Toolkit effective June 23, 2022, Durham Public Schools is referring to the CDC's Operational Guidance for K-12 Schools Operational Guidance for K-12 Schools and Early Care and Education Programs to Support Safe In-Person Learning | CDC) as a resource in adopting procedures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 (and other communicable diseases).

 

The Durham Public Schools Board of Education and administration continue to strongly recommend the wearing of face coverings, vaccinations, testing, and distancing where appropriate as mitigation strategies. DPS continues to invest in building improvements, including ventilation upgrades to further protect our students, educators, and staff. DPS also continues to strongly encourage individuals to stay home when they are presenting symptoms that could indicate COVID-19.

 

 District COVID-19 Updates

  • Effective Aug 29, 2022 all schools will move to the new testing platform (COQUI). 

  • Diagnostic Testing will continue under the supervision of the COVID-19 Response Manager (Principal and Assistant Principal) & C-19 Nurse extenders. .

  • All individuals need to be registered prior to testing.

  • Morehead has also received at home test kits to distribute to staff & students. 

  •  

 FACE COVERINGS

  • Face coverings are no longer required, but strongly recommended on all DPS campuses. 

  • Masks are recommended in indoor settings for people at high risk for severe disease and who are not up to date on vaccines.

  • Students and staff with COVID-19 symptomatic while at school must wear a mask until they depart campus.

  • Following a COVID-19 infection, individuals must wear a well-fitting mask after the end of isolation (days 6-10).

  • Close contacts with no symptoms do not need to quarantine, but must wear a well-fitting mask for 10 days following exposure.

 

SYMPTOMATIC INDIVIDUALS PROTOCOL

  • Symptomatic individuals should test prior to returning to school.

  • Symptomatic individuals who test positive, must follow DPS Isolation Protocols outlined below.

  • Symptomatic individuals who test negative or receive an alternative diagnosis, can return when symptoms have improved and have been fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.

  • Diagnostic Testing will continue for symptomatic individuals under the supervision of the COVID-19 Response Manager & C-19 Nurse extenders. 

  • All individuals need to be registered prior to testing.

ISOLATION PROTOCOLS

  • When an individual tests positive for COVID, they must stay home and isolate for 5 days.  The date of the positive test collection or the date symptoms started (whichever came first) is day 0.

  • Individuals may return on Day 6 as long as symptoms are improving and the individual has been fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication. 

  • Individuals must wear a mask 100% of the time around others until day 10 after coming out of isolation.
