DPS Celebrates/DPS Beyond 28 Black History Month Series



Learning about African American History should extend beyond the 28 days in February that have been nationally designated as Black History Month. Providing culturally diverse perspectives is our commitment to historically inclusive education for our students and community year long.

Join the #DPSCelebrates / #DPSBeyond28 weekly LIVE events throughout February & March to learn and experience some amazing African-American contributions to our community.

    To launch our 
    #DPS Celebrates/ #DPSBeyond28 Black History month series join us LIVE to explore a gallery of community dreams launched by KidsVotingDurham’s MLK’s Day #Dreams4Durham campaign. 

  • FEBRUARY 10, 2021 | 1 PM

    Join DPS’ own Executive Director for Equity Affairs, Dr. Kelvin Bullock, and his wife, Dr. Ronda Taylor Bullock, Lead Curator for we are (working to extend anti-racist education), both former teachers at DPS Hillside High School in a LIVE session as they share their reflections and dreams for Black history in Durham.

    Promoting one of our own!  Jasmyne Stewart is a DPS alumnus, educator, and now Children’s book author.  Join us to hear Jasmyne read her book LIVE and share her experience.

  • FEBRUARY 24, 2021 | 1 PM

    Promoting one of our own! DeMarcus Boone is a DPS alumnus, Durham Muralist, and now Children’s book illustrator.  Join us LIVE to experience a hands-on artistic experience and hear about his collaboration to illustrate a children’s book.


    As part of our #DPSCelebrates / #DPSBeyond28 events, students in grades 6-12 have an opportunity to view a  digital viewing of the feature film, The Best of Enemies starring Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell that focuses on the rivalry between a local civil rights activist and KKK leader to co-chair a committee on the desegregation of Durham Schools.

    Promoting locally owned black business!  Leonardo & Zwelli Williams are the owners of Zweli’s restaurant in Durham.  Join us LIVE to learn about authentic African Cuisine as well as what it takes to be an entrepreneur and open your own business.

    DPS’ own Jermaine Porter, the Boys of Color Program Coordinator is sponsoring a DPS district initiative called We Are Kings.  This program empowers boys of color to become agents & advocates for more equitable practices in their schools.  Join us LIVE to learn more about this program.

    Join us for a learning adventure on African American influence can be found at the core of American life. As you explore our history, you find stories of strength, resilience, and achievement. In every community, these stories are foundational to building shared values, which inspire today’s youth to become tomorrow’s leaders.  Join us LIVE to hear about two digital programs from Everfi that bring to life a number of influential leaders and events whose impact changed the fabric of American life.

    Dr. Grady is a STEM Ambassador who is the first woman Computer Science Ph.D. graduate from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Information Science/Systems at North Carolina Central University.
