DPS Board of Education Passes Policy Supporting LGBTQIA+ Students and Staff

The Durham Public Schools Board of Education has unanimously approved an LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Allied/Asexual) and gender support policy, 1735/4035/7235, effective immediately. The vote came after discussion during the regular work session held last night.

“With this vote, the Board of Education has strengthened our commitment to creating an inclusive learning environment for LGBTQIA+ students and staff,” said Chair Bettina Umstead. “Thank you to everyone who advocated for these protections. We hear you and appreciate you for pushing us to best support our Durham community.”

The Board committed to further training for themselves and senior staff on topics such as learning about supporting LGBTQIA+ youth; state and national laws addressing public school education and LGBTQIA+ students and staff; and professional development on LGBTQIA+ language, affairs, and practices.
