June includes many celebratory events, such as Pride Month, Father’s Day, and African American Music Appreciation Month. Juneteenth, also known as “Freedom Day”, is a celebration held on June 19th that signifies the emancipation of enslaved people in Texas - the last state in the confederacy with institutional slavery.  Troops marched throughout Galveston, TX, on June 19th, 1865 to announce the freedom of formerly enslaved African Americans, two and half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth represents the true independence day for African Americans and those who share enslaved African heritage.  The Office of Equity Affairs invites you to celebrate this holiday and this significant part of American history by reading or conducting research about the history of Juneteenth, reflecting on the legacy of African Americans, or participating in local celebrations.
