A Message From 2023 Teacher of the Year Jahara Davis

Welcome back, DPS Community,

As Summer ends and we officially start the 2023-2024 school year, some of us are starting fresh, new assignments, working at new schools, or establishing new careers, whereas the rest of us are returning with excitement to be intentional in our growth from the years before. Marian Wright Edelman said, “Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.” No matter your season, set a goal to improve the lives of our students, their families, and our community. Soon, we will see the impact it has on making our Durham community better.

As teachers we tend to wear multiple hats to place the needs of our students before our own. As wonderful as servant leadership is, I encourage you to take care of yourselves as well. Throughout the year, find moments to do just that. This is the most rewarding job in the world, yet it comes with its challenges. None of us can be amazing in our roles without a support system. I encourage you to also take care of one another within your school. Above all else, remember your SPARK. Your spark is your why. Why did you choose to embrace, to educate, and to empower our students?

I wish each of you a wonderful and exciting year. I challenge each of you to ignite your limitless potential daily to affirm your best year yet. Again, welcome back.
