DPS and DPSF to host An Evening to Shine to showcase Arts in our schools and support secondary education opportunities

Evening To Shine

Durham Public Schools (DPS) and the Durham Public Schools Foundation (DPSF) are thrilled to announce that together we will be hosting An Evening to Shine, formerly known as An Evening of Entertainment, to showcase our district’s performing arts students and successes while raising money for college scholarships.

Like years past, hundreds of choral and dance students representing all the schools from across the district will perform, showcasing their skills. Along with this, new arts performances and community engagement opportunities will take place and staff members will be recognized and spotlighted who have had an instrumental part in these students' lives.

“It is very exciting to see our district is now able to resume events such as An Evening to Shine that will showcase the artistic talents and successes of our students as are beginning to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic that put a hold on such gatherings,” said Dr. Pascal Mubenga, Superintendent of DPS.

The event, which was formerly known as An Evening of Entertainment, was previously hosted by DPS and the DPS Scholarship Foundation (DPSSF).  Recently,

the two Foundations) merged. DPSF is continuing DPSSF’s long history of awarding college scholarships to DPS seniors and celebrating talent through this annual event, which has not taken place since 2019 due to COVID-19.

“We’re thrilled to partner on this historic Durham event, now with a new name,” said DPS Foundation’s Executive Director Magan Gonzales-Smith. “Evening to Shine is a wonderful opportunity for our entire community to champion our students and celebrate their brilliance, all while supporting college accessibility for DPS students.”

“This is a celebration of the arts and allows us to allow the students to shine collaboratively on the DPAC stage,” said Jeremy Tucker, DPS Director of Arts Programs. “After the COVID-19 pandemic, we have learned that our students and community need the arts now more than ever. Our DPS Arts educators are excited to begin working with our students and learning from our guest Artists for an evening that our community will long remember.”

Proceeds from An Evening to Shine  support the Durham Promise Scholarship Fund, a community-funded scholarship program administered by DPS Foundation and based on the belief that every DPS student deserves an equitable, debt-free college education.

The fundraising event is scheduled to take place on February 18, 2022, at the Durham Performing Arts Center.  Click here for more information:
