DPS Board of Education Names DSA Interim Principal
During Thursday night’s meeting of the Durham Public Schools Board of Education, Jim Key was named the interim principal of Durham School of Arts, effective July 1, 2021.
Mr. Keys has more than 30 years of experience in public education working as a teacher, coach, principal and area superintendent for high schools. He spent his entire career in DPS after graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill where he earned both his B.A. and M.S.A. degrees. He was honored as the Teacher of the Year for two different schools and the North Carolina High School “Mat News” Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1994.
“Mr. Key’s extensive history and knowledge of DPS and respect from across the Durham community make him the perfect supportive leader to students and staff at DSA as we begin the hiring process for a new principal,” said Dr. Pascal Mubenga, Superintendent of Durham Public Schools. “We are all glad that he is coming back during this important time.”
Mr. Key will serve as interim principal through December 2021 while district administration conducts a thorough search for the best person to fill the position with input from DSA students, staff, and families.
