September 12, 2022 Message from Dr. Hart-Olivis

Good evening Hillandale Families,

This is Dr. Hart-Olivis, proud principal of Hillandale Elementary School with this week’s Monday Message.  You should receive this message in both English and Spanish.

It was wonderful seeing so many of our families and students last week for Back to School Night.  If you weren’t able to attend, we discussed our goals for this year’s academic growth toward 65% or more of our students showing proficiency on state tests, and how we’ll get there.  By now your child should be able to tell you the goals they have set with their classroom teacher for the end of the academic year.  Hillandale’s school improvement plan has a goal of making sure to consistently communicate with parents the expectations of them and the curriculum of the home to support student learning.  Did you know that there is research that reflects that the curriculum of the home is a better predictor of student achievement than socioeconomic status?  That means together we can make the difference that can move our students toward being successful adults regardless of their neighborhood or the material things they have.  The sky is the limit for our Hillandale Hurricanes.  That also means we need our Hillandale parents and the rest of the village to help us as we challenge our learners to be their absolute best.

I’ve received some feedback regarding our carpool in recent weeks.  We’re continuing to work to make sure our students get from your care to ours and back safely, so your feedback is valuable to us.

Remember that every second counts as we move traffic through campus.  We need students to be prepared with their items for school ready to exit the vehicle on the right side in the morning.  If your child uses a booster seat, feel free to move up to the extended parking space so you can safely buckle or unbuckle their seat.  Please also be mindful of the flow of traffic in front of you.  Looking down at a phone while traffic is moving can impact the entire line.

To keep our students and families safe, we have Hillandale blue cones to help drivers see how traffic flows on Hillandale’s campus.  Students are to remain in the vehicle until a Hillandale staff member opens the door and welcomes your child out of the car.  We’re working harder to make sure there is an adult to greet your child and see that they are supervised heading into the building, ready for class on time.  Please try not to arrive at school in the carpool lane until at least 7:05 am, as our teachers arrive at 7 and can’t park to be ready for the day when traffic is blocking the parking lot.  The timing isn’t quite where we want it yet, so please continue to be patient as we work to get it just right.  We’re looking at considering new traffic patterns to help ease the back ups.  In afternoon carpool, don’t forget to hang your yellow tag on your rearview mirror.  Our staff can’t see it if it’s on the dashboard, due to the reflection of the sky.  Each student at Hillandale has a carpool number, and if your child is returning, it’s a different number than it was last year.  Cars are not to park illegally on Hillandale Road to avoid the line, but we do promise we’re working on making the line move more quickly.

While we’re getting back to being able to welcome cleared visitors into school, there is no park and walk option to take your child into the building.  We are not currently permitting parents to walk children to class.  However, we have staff members who can ensure your little one makes it into the building safely.

If you don’t receive these messages on your phone and in your email, they are posted on our school website.  You can also trigger the messages in your PowerSchool Parent Portal account.

Stay up to date about what’s happening at Hillandale on our school website, and on Twitter and Instagram @HillandalePOWER.  You can also respond to me directly from this email, but now that we’ve started school, your child’s teacher is the best first contact.

Our goal at Hillandale is to always be results-focused, data-informed, and student-driven.  As always, thank you for your support, your partnership, and most of all, thank you for being part of The Hillandale Family.

Have a fantastic week!
