5/10/21 Monday Message from Dr. Hart-Olivis

Good evening Hillandale families,

This is Principal Hart-Olivis with this week’s Monday Message.

This week is super busy, as we have several activities planned for both our students to close out the year with a strong finish and to get you and the rest of our community involved.

Parents of students in third through fifth grades, as promised, we’re using the data we collected from students’ recent CASE21 assessments along with other information about their performance to do a final push to master academic standards before the end of grade tests.  We’ll be harnessing the teaching of some of our incredible supports within the building to create small groups for study; even Mr. Bloom and I will be teaching groups.  Parents, we need your help in making sure your upper-grade students stay focused on learning, even as the weather gets warmer and we yearn for summer.  It’s important that our students attend class on time every day and try their absolute best.

Several families have reached out to us at the school for more information about Operation Summer Learning with DPS.  Hillandale will be a host site for Hillandale students along with students from E.K. Powe, Club Boulevard, Easley, Watts, and Morehead Montessori, and we’re making sure some of the best and brightest teachers available will be supporting students for this opportunity.  Operation Summer Learning is offered specifically for students as an extended learning opportunity to demonstrate continued progress because our data shows the child continues to need additional support to be successful on their academic path.  Session 1 goes from June 14 to July 2 and Session 2 goes from July 12 to July 30.  Students will attend Monday - Thursday in-person full day, with flexible asynchronous virtual activities on Fridays.  If you received a letter from your child’s teacher about Operation Summer Learning, we strongly encourage you to take the opportunity to register in the program to help support their unfinished learning over the summer.  Registration information for this important opportunity is on the letter sent home from your child’s teacher if they have been invited to attend.

Wednesday, May 12 we welcome our pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade families as well as other families potentially interested in bringing their children to Hillandale for our informational session about how to support early learners, what to expect, and how to join the Hillandale Family for next year.  We’ll have two sessions that day: our mid-day session is from 12 pm - 1:30 pm and our evening session is from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm.  Our very own Dr. Pascal Mubenga, superintendent of Durham Public Schools will be joining us for the evening session, and we’ll have our superstar kindergarten teachers join us as well to answer some questions about what school might look like next year.  We’ll also have our Advanced Academics guru, Ms. Moffett, share details about our kindergarten to second-grade nurture program at Hillandale, which exposes our youngest learners to complex thinking and fun challenges.  More information and a direct link to the presentation will be on our school website,

Also Wednesday, May 12, our fantastic PTA will be hosting our first-ever virtual Hike for Hillandale!  If you’re new to Hillandale, you may not know about this important event.  The annual Hike for Hillandale is a staple within The Hillandale Family and the Hillandale community.  This year, the PTA is proud to announce the Hike with a twist!.  Did you think we would let COVID-19 hold us back from a great Hillandale tradition?  No way!  The Hike for Hillandale is the largest annual Hillandale PTA fundraiser, and it will be easier than ever to support our school this year as we partner with MemberHub to move the Hike for Hillandale online.  This will be a Wellness Wednesday event May 12, 2021.  For more information, please visit the Hillandale PTA Facebook page or text “HillandaleHike” to 919-626-3277 to receive a link.

We’ll have a teacher workday Thursday, May 13, so teachers will not hold classes and the school building will be closed on that date.  We will also have the building and classes closed May 31 in observance of Memorial Day.

Stay up to date about what’s happening at Hillandale on our school website, and on Twitter and Instagram @HillandalePOWER.

As always, thank you for your support, your partnership, and most of all for being part of The Hillandale Family.

Have a wonderful week!
