11/9/20 - Monday Message from Principal Hart-Olivis
Good evening Hillandale Families,
This is Principal Hart-Olivis with this week’s Monday Message.
This week we celebrate the hard work and dedication of our nation’s veterans. Wednesday, November 11, there will not be virtual classes, including Wellness Wednesday activities, in observance of Veteran’s Day. This week, we’ll highlight some friends of The Hillandale Family who have served in the U.S. Military to thank them for their service. On behalf of the entire Hillandale Family, thank you to the veterans in our community.
A few families have reached out to me with questions about LanSchool, the new software available in Durham Public Schools designed to remotely assist students with navigation, especially during our virtual learning time. Families should know that the LanSchool software is helpful, but not required for students to access core instruction and success during online learning. LanSchool is automatically added to all DPS Chromebooks. Students do not need to do anything to activate the software besides their normal login to Clever to be connected with LanSchool.
- DPS will not be loading LanSchool onto students' personal devices at this time, unless it is by written parent request. At Hillandale we will not be asking families to pick up DPS Chromebook devices solely for the purpose of utilizing LanSchool.
- This software is a helpful addition to virtual learning. Please see the LanSchool Air Parent Letter to learn more about the benefits of using LanSchool Air.
Students in fifth grade will be taking a survey regarding school climate and the overall learning environment at our school (online) in upcoming weeks. We know learning has looked a little different this year, but this survey will help our school learn more about the school’s climate and safety and to help make our school better along with supporting student success. Please encourage your child to take the survey seriously and answer questions honestly. Thank you for your help and support with our Student Climate Survey.
Parents, we need your help with increasing the number of PowerSchool Parent Portal accounts to access your student’s grading information. PowerSchool is the official resource for student grades as required by the district. If you need additional assistance with your Parent Portal account, Zoom labs will continue during the month of November to assist schools in establishing parent portal accounts and assist schools with troubleshooting Parent Portal issues. The Lab is open, optional, and first come first served. Tuesday in November 10th and 17th 9:00am-11:00am Zoom Link.
Hillandale Families, when school meets in the building, we often get to share live performances with our students. Even though, we are in a state of remote learning, we can still share in this type of fun learning experience! This Friday we have an exciting opportunity for our students to see a show put on by the National Theatre for Children. The 35 minute play, “The Clue That Burned Blue” focuses on natural gas conservation and safety. Kindergarten to 2nd graders can watch a show designed especially for them Friday at 12:30. 3rd to 5th graders can see their show Friday at 1:30 pm. If this time does not work for your family, the show can be viewed later as a recording but, it will not have the interactive features of the live show. Look for the link from our media coordinator, Mrs. Masinick through SeeSaw later this week or access it here: Livestream Link

As always, thank you for your support, your partnership, and most of all for being part of The Hillandale Family.
Have a fantastic week.
