October 23, 2022: Special Sunday Night Message from Dr. Hart-Olivis:
Good evening Hillandale Families,
This is Dr. Hart-Olivis, proud principal of Hillandale Elementary School with this week’s message a day early because it contains information about Monday. You should receive this message in both English and Spanish.
Tomorrow, Monday, October 24 is a district early release day. Students will be dismissed at 12:15. If you need to change the way your child gets home tomorrow afternoon, please let your child’s teacher or the office know tomorrow by 10 am.
Wednesday, October 26 is fall picture day. Your child may have already come home with an envelope for you to select your package, and there are now easy online options for you to purchase as well.
Book Character Dress-Up Day is Friday, October 28. This is our fun way of celebrating our love of literacy here at Hillandale. Children may come to school dressed as a character from a favorite book they’ve read.
No school for students Monday, October 31 due to a teacher workday.
Carpool families, we’re noticing a bottleneck that takes place in carpool right before the bell rings in the morning. Our team works hard to get our students into the building in time, but we need your help to make this happen. Carpool times run a bit more smoothly when traffic comes gradually. Doors open for students at 7:15 each day and the tardy bell rings at 7:45.
Fifth-grade families, have you heard of Student U? It’s a community organization committed to supporting students starting in sixth grade and through their college graduation. They are looking for Durham students who are performing at grade level or slightly below grade level, students who would be first-generation college students OR who qualify for free/reduced lunch to apply to the program. Applications are available at this link.
Our incredible PTA is putting the finishing touches on planning an awesome first annual Fall Festival at Hillandale for October 29th. Please keep your eye on your child’s folders coming home with the flyer, and Seesaw for the newest details.
At Hillandale, it’s important to us that we regularly communicate with you about how you can help boost your child’s achievement at school and how important your support is from home. Every student at Hillandale can learn and grow, and we’re on a team together to help our learners achieve.
A few families and even students have discussed student goal setting and achievement with me this year. To be clear, the most important part of the message about student achievement this year should be that we need each student to be prepared to learn and grow, whether they came to us showing proficiency or not. It’s my understanding that I gave some students a different impression, causing them to stress about achievement this year. Please help your child understand that what is expected of them is their personal best at all times.
Hillandale is proud to announce the official opening of the new addition to our outdoor classroom. We’re thrilled that this adds to our long-term goals to enhance our already excellent STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) focus. The new addition includes outdoor chalkboards, seating with desks, storage, and a set up for the best collaborative learning experience we’ve seen yet! We’ll be posting some of our fun on social media. Hillandale is #HESfullSTEAMahead!
Stay up to date about what’s happening at Hillandale on our school website, hillandale.dpsnc.net and on Twitter and Instagram @HillandalePOWER. You can also respond to me directly from this email, but now that we’ve started school, your child’s teacher is the best first contact.
At Hillandale we strive for everything we do to be results-focused, data-informed, and student-driven. We want to empower your child to excel in the academic and social skills required to be a leader in our community. As always, thank you for your support, your partnership, and most of all, thank you for being part of The Hillandale Family.
Have a fantastic week!
