Hispanic Hertitage Month
Just wanted to let you know some of the things in the works to celebrate HHM during the next two weeks:
Salsa dance party- Next Thursday ( Oct 15) 6:00-7:00 we will host a Zoom Salsa class with Andrea Lara leading us. See the attached flyer and please share with kids (it went out from the PTS tonight in English and Spanish)- talk it up and plan to join in the fun!
Butterfly art exhibit- we chose butterflies because they are a symbol of hope and migration in the Latina culture as well as a connection to the ancestors (spirits flying between the worlds) in Mexican folklore.
Students are invited to create colorful butterflies to display in a school-wide art show (either hanging on the playground fence or possibly in our school windows to protect them from the elements).
We have put posterboard and a flyer for each student in your classrooms, to be sent home tomorrow via the supply pick-ups. Please make a note indicating to parents that they should take a piece of posterboard for each of their students.
Students will return their completed butterflies at the next Pick-up (Oct. 23) by leaving them in the bins. They will be collected from the bins and the PTA will have parents designated to create the exhibit.
The culture committee has created activities to help students learn about these creatures and migration; as well as suggestions for drawing and creating their butterflies- they are formatted for See Saw (for Lower and Primary) and Google Classroom (for Upper). Your culture committee representative will share them with you.
In addition, Ms. Marquez is recording the book Dreamers , by Yuyi Morales, for you to introduce the activity during your morning meeting (if you so choose)- it will also be linked for the students in the activities.
Our specials teachers are putting together additional brain breaks and lessons to go along with this celebration!
