Dear DPS families:
As we head into the Thanksgiving holiday, I wanted to express my personal gratitude to you for supporting our students, teachers, and school communities during this school year. Teaching and learning has been a challenge during COVID-19, but the dedication I have seen from our teachers and staff has been inspiring. We are determined to support your child better every week—to improve online learning and, if conditions improve in the pandemic, to safely bring our students back to our classrooms.
Last Thursday night, our school board voted to allow us to open up our elementary schools to in-person learning under our Plan B in January under two conditions. First, the positivity rate of COVID-19 cases in our community must be below four percent for fourteen consecutive days. Second, remote learning must be the default; all elementary students will remain online unless families request in-person instruction.
When we come back from the Thanksgiving break, we will directly reach out to families asking your preferences, and we will have events and information resources available to you to help you make your decision. Among those resources is our COVID-19 Data Dashboard on the DPS website.
Many extended families will be spending Thanksgiving apart this year. However you celebrate the long holiday weekend, I hope that you will protect each other and stay safe, rest and recharge, and connect with your loved ones. I will do the same with my family while being grateful for our strong Durham community that cares for our students and schools.
Sincerely,
Pascal Mubenga, Ph.D.
Superintendent
