Step Up to STEM Program


Step Up to STEM is a free, one-week summer residential program for 8th-grade African-American, Hispanic American, and Native American students. It is hosted by the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in downtown Durham, and it runs from July 14 to July 19, 2019

Step Up to STEM exists to:

  • Improve underrepresented students' competence in science and mathematics.
  • Nurture underrepresented students' enthusiasm for science and mathematics.
  • Interest students in pursuing careers in research or other science-related areas.

 Key dates for summer 2019 applications:

  • January 2 - Online application open
  • March 1 - Applications due (including teacher recommendations and official school transcripts)
  • March 29 - Students notified of acceptance
