Dynamic Leadership Unveiled: DPS Board Approves Key Appointments
The Durham Public Schools Board of Education approved Superintendent Pascal Mubenga's recommendations for school leadership positions:
Mshinda Middleton-Brown
Principal
Murray-Massenburg Elementary
Longtime DPS educator and principal Mshinda Middleton-Brown, has been named principal of DPS's newest school, Murray-Massenburg Elementary, slated to open in August 2024. Middleton-Brown will begin her new post in January. Middleton-Brown has led R.N. Harris Elementary for the past four years and has catapulted student achievement during her leadership. She holds a master's in school administration from North Carolina Central University and is DPS's 2023-24 Principal of the Year.
Catherine Lucas
Interim Principal
R.N. Harris Elementary
Catherine Lucas will transition from assistant principal to interim principal at R.N. Harris in January following the departure of Principal Mshinda Middleton-Brown. Lucas has been a valued staff member of the school's community for more than 20 years. She served as a teacher and instructional learning coach before becoming an administrator in 2019. She earned her master's in school administration from North Carolina Central University.
Lamont Dixon
Principal
Durham School of Technology
Lamont Dixon has been named principal at the Durham School of Technology after serving as interim principal since July 2023. He was the school's assistant principal for nine years. Prior to joining DPS, he was a school administrator in Caswell County Schools and Rockingham County Schools, and previously taught in Guilford County Schools and Danville Public Schools. He received a master's in educational leadership from Longwood University.
Dr. LaToya McCrimmon
Pre-K Coordinator
The Whitted School
Dr. LaToya McCrimmon will become the Pre-K coordinator at The Whitted School in January, overseeing the daily operations of the school following the departure of Dr. Patricia Townsend. Dr. McCrimmon brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the role, serving as a Pre-K teacher for more than a decade in DPS and the private sector. She currently serves as the district's transition to kindergarten facilitator. She holds a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Liberty University.
