In addition to Burton Magnet Elementary School being named one of the top 20 magnet programs in the nation by Magnet Schools of America, an additional 14 Durham Public Schools magnet programs were given Magnet School of Excellence or Magnet School of Distinction honors by MSA in 2020.
Joining Burton as Magnet Schools of Excellence this year were two of DPS’s Montessori magnet programs: Lakewood Montessori Middle School and Morehead Montessori Magnet Elementary School.

- Holt Elementary Language Academy
- Lowe’s Grove Magnet Middle School of Technology
- Middle College High School at Durham Technical Community College
- Neal Magnet Middle School
- R.N. Harris Integrated Arts/Core Knowledge Magnet School
- Sandy Ridge Visual and Performing Arts Elementary School
- The School for Creative Studies
- G. Pearson STEAM Magnet Elementary School
The Magnet School of Merit Awards recognize member magnet schools/programs that demonstrate an exemplary commitment to academic standards, curriculum innovation, desegregation/diversity efforts, specialized teaching staffs and parent and community involvement.
