We are proud to recognize Shamar Washington, a graduating senior who successfully completed the Durham Public Schools (DPS) Transportation Internship with DPS Transportation Services. Following graduation, Shamar will begin full-time employment with DPS Transportation Services. Congratulations, Shamar, on this exciting achievement!
DPS Transportation Internship
Position: Diesel Mechanic Intern
Work Atmosphere:
"The work environment is busy, and the other mechanics are very helpful. Employees are also expected to follow a dress code."
How have your classroom experiences prepared you for the internship?
"Through my classroom experiences, I have developed important skills such as paying attention to detail, showing respect, and staying organized."
What have you done at your internship that makes you proud? Why?
"I have completed major jobs such as changing air fittings on school buses, performing multiple brake jobs, repairing coolant leaks, draining and refilling coolant systems, fixing oil leaks, and much more. These accomplishments make me proud because they demonstrate the skills and knowledge I have gained, while allowing me to contribute meaningful work that helps keep our buses operating safely and efficiently."
What have you learned about yourself and what you want in a career?
"During the internship, I learned that I am very careful with my work. I would rather ask a million questions than make a costly mistake. I want a career that I enjoy and one that allows me to feel good about the work I accomplish at the end of each day."
We are excited to see all that Shamar will accomplish as he begins his career with DPS Transportation Services. Best wishes for continued success as you embark on this exciting new chapter!
