How DPS Supports ESL Student Achievement
The English Learner Services Department is committed to providing English Learners the opportunity to participate effectively in the regular instructional program, by creating a learning environment that encourages students' pride in their cultural heritage and provides the cognitive and affective support to help them achieve academic success and prepare them for productive careers in the future.
Our primary focus is to provide language assistance services and classroom environments to promote English proficiency. Our purpose is to nurture and encourage English Language Learners to achieve their highest potential.
The goal of English Learner Services is to support students to provide equitable access who speak other languages and are identified as needing language services in order to experience academic success both in the classroom and on state assessments.
English Learner Services are designed both for newcomers to U.S. Schools as well as students who have been in U.S. schools for a few years. Students may be proficient in spoken English but may require support in reading and writing. It is important that all students are successful and language assistance services are provided based upon need until they exit the program.
New enrollees from culturally and linguistically diverse families begin their education journey in DPS with the assistance of the team at the ESL Registration Center. We assist families who need assistance with the enrollment portal, verify required documentation necessary for enrollment, and assess students on English Language Proficiency to inform placement in language services and scheduling.
