Our annual Black History Month Celebration is scheduled for this Thursday, February 29th (5:30 - 7:00 pm).  The evening’s theme of “Black Excellence” will feature student work from daily lessons, projects, and presentations.  Families will have the opportunity to participate in a gallery walk of student work, watch performances, and enjoy dinner together.  Food will be served between 5:30 and 6:15. Performances will run from 6:20 to 6:40.  The gallery walk is available the entire night.  We hope to see you there!

    Help with Growing Together

All current 3rd and 4th grade students will remain at Glenn for the rest of their elementary school careers.  To our current K - 2nd grade students who applied for a lottery school for the 2024-25 school year, you will find out about your applications this Friday, March 1st.

As I’ve mentioned before, we’re so sad about more than 90% of our K-2 families moving to new schools next year.  The Growing Together initiative is impacting our community as much as any in Durham.  As a result, we would love your help!  If you know a family in Glenn’s new attendance zone, and they haven’t had the chance to see Glenn, please encourage them to contact me for a tour.  With our exciting construction project, amazing teaching staff, unprecedented academic growth, and unique programming like STEM and Outdoor Education - we want to be the first choice for every family in our new zone.  Our team is happy to visit local sites like community centers, churches, shopping centers, and more to promote the Glenn vision.  Please help us spread the word and these Glenn promotional materials and our points of pride.

    Glenn’s Points of Pride include:

    • Exceeded Academic Growth in consecutive years.
    • Greatest academic gains in Durham from pre-Covid years to present.
    • Our students ranked 10th in math performance in all of Durham.
    • Our English Language Learners ranked 2nd in academic achievement in all of Durham.
    • Fully staffed for three consecutive years.
    • Increased bilingual staff by approximately 20 staff members in just two years - with approximately one-third of our K-5 teachers being fluent in Spanish.
    • 100% of staff believes Glenn is a “good place to work and learn” - tied for highest in DPS.
    • Former DPS teacher of the year, former teachers of the year from at least 5 schools, 6 DPS teachers/staff of the month in the past two years, DPS counselor of the year, and former North Carolina principal of the year finalist and DPS principal of the year.
    • Added many community partners, including Bike Durham, Durham Bulls, Helping Education, Book Harvest, Activate Good, several local churches and sororities, Communities in Schools, NCCU and UNC graduate schools, Duke Athletics, and more.

We would greatly appreciate your help in spreading the word about our Glenn community!

    With Glenn Pride,

    Matt Hunt, Principal
