  • Imagine the Possibilities: Exploring Careers with Durham's Black Professionals and Business Owners

    The Creekside Elementary PTA and Parents of African American Children (PAAC) presented "Imagine the Possibilities: Exploring Careers with Durham's Black Professionals and Business Owners", on Thursday, February 28th. Black professionals from a variety of fields/careers provided interactive demonstrations to students showing them that they can achieve what they dream. The event showcased Black-owned food trucks and vendors, community resources, artistic performances, and displays of student work inspired by African American History and culture.

    Congrats to our 2019 Elementary School Battle of the Books champions Forest View Elementary School (coached by Kathleen Hill-Graves and Nicole Sennett). Forest View will represent DPS at Regionals on April 13th in Garner.

  • Battle of the Books 2019 (Elementary School Edition) Day 2

    Congratulations to all the students who competed this morning in the Day 2 of the Elementary Battle of the Books. All of the students were excellent! The schools that participated today were; Eno Valley, Forest View, Glenn, Hillandale, Hope Valley, Morehead, Pearsonton, E.K. Powe, Y.E. Smith, and Southwest.

  • Battle of the Books 2019 (Elementary School edition) Day 1

    All of the students did an amazing job! The schools that participated today were; Club, Creekside, Easley, Holt, Lakewood, Little River, Mangum, Merrick-Moore, W.G. Pearson, Sandy Ridge, Spring Valley, and George Watts. These four teams will compete against the top 4 teams in tomorrow’s event for Day 2 of the Elementary Battle of the Books. George Watts (146 pts), Club Blvd (124 pts), Easley (124 pts), and Spring Valley (112 pts) will advance to the finals. Only 4 teams will advance to the final round that will take place on Monday, March 4, 2019.

    On Friday, February 22, 2019, DPS hosted the 2019 #BattleOfTheBooks for middle school students at our Staff Development Center. Students from all over the district competed. Congratulations to Rogers-Herr Middle School for winning 1st Place, Githens 2nd, and DSA 3rd.

    The DPS Office of Equity Affairs hosted the Barbershop Talk Series "Building Systems to Support Boys of Color" on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at the Holton Career and Resource Center. The event was well attended.

    DPS Title I hosted “An Energized Good Time,” on Tuesday, February 19th, 2019 at the Durham Armory. Our #WeAreDPS families participated in an evening full of STEM activities, ate dinner and were provided with resources to support Reading-Language Arts and Math at home.

  • Hallelujah! Swing School (2/15/19)

    Hallelujah Swing School is apart of Hillside Legacy Weekend, celebrates Black History Month, the legacy of the legendary Mr. John H. Gattis, the legendary Mr. Wendell Tabb, the city of Durham, the Triangle area, the state of North Carolina, and the legendary show Mr. G's Swing School. Hillside Drama brings the past to the present in the revitalized adaptation of the legendary Mr. G's Swing School.
