Lab and Chemical Safety

  • Durham Public Schools takes great pride in the quality of its’ science programs.  Keeping students and employees safe in the lab or when using chemicals is very important to us.  All new DPS employees receive basic training in chemical and hazardous materials safety.  Physical science and some Maintenance Services’ personnel receive additional in-depth training on those topics as well as safe laboratory practices, safe lab waste disposal, and fire suppression.

    Just like businesses, Durham Public Schools must comply with state and federal regulations that provide precautions for the use of hazardous chemicals and substances on the premises.  Durham Public Schools follows the guidelines provided by the North Carolina OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (CFR 1910.1200).
