The Next Northern High School
Durham Public Schools is reevaluating its available options for opening a new, modern school facility of which the Northern High School community can be proud. Due to an overheated construction market in the Triangle, and also to the realization that available land on the current Northern High campus is not as suitable for building a new school building as originally believed, costs for completing the project have increased well past the amount secured for Northern High in the 2016 bond.
The Durham Public Schools Board of Education and the Durham County Board of Commissioners have given DPS staff the green light to pursue land and design work for Northern High while sources of additional funding to complete the project are being explored. The 2016 bond funding for Northern High remains in place and is not being used for any other purpose.
On this page you will find continuing updates on the process for building the next Northern High School while addressing key maintenance issues in the current facility.
