Safety & Security in Durham Public Schools

  • The Safety & Security Department plans, coordinates and implements methods to support safe and secure environments for students and staff - our number one priority. Key functions include assisting departments and school administrators in security planning and design for existing facilities and new construction projects. This department works closely with law enforcement to maintain an effective presence of School Resource Officers (SROs) and other law enforcement support on school campuses.
Durham Public Schools works closely with emergency management, law enforcement, public health, and other safety officials at the local, state and federal levels to develop and strengthen school plans for handling emergencies. Each school has an Emergency Preparedness Plan which includes guidelines on how to respond to severe weather, fire, and chemical. All schools have emergency and crisis response teams that are an integral part of the school's emergency management plan.

The Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) program is a school-based, law enforcement officer instructed classroom curriculum taught to fourth and sixth-grade students in Durham Public Schools.
The primary objective of the program is prevention. It is designed and intended as an immunization against delinquency, youth violence, and gang membership.
G.R.E.A.T. lessons focus on teaching life skills to students that help them avoid using delinquent behavior and violence to solve problems.
G.R.E.A.T. deputies strive to build a bridge of understanding between youth, school personnel and law enforcement professionals.
The collective effort will assist in reducing gang involvement, violence, and overall juvenile delinquency.

SROs partner with and are assigned to secondary schools. Their primary duties are to enforce the law, act as a resource with respect to delinquency prevention, provide guidance on law-related issues, provide individual counseling to students, and to explain to students the role of law enforcement in society.
