What makes The School for Creative Studies (SCS) a magnet school?
SCS is both a calendar magnet and a theme magnet. We operate on a year round schedule. Our school vision is: Creativity. Communication. Collaboration. Community. Our theme centers on applied creativity, media, design, and communication arts. The program of study features coursework selections including Creative Entrepreneurship & Marketing, Digital Media & Design, Video Technology & Communications, Design for Living: Architectural Design, Music & Audio Production, Visual Arts, Healthful Living/Outdoor Education, and Spanish.
What about sports?
The School for Creative Studies does not offer traditional competitive sports. Students enrolled at SCS in grades 9-12 only may be eligible to participate in competitive sports at their base school; however, transportation from SCS to the base school is not provided by Durham Public School. Questions can be directed to the DPS athletic director, Larry McDonald at (919) 560-3742. We do offer several intramural athletic programs including soccer, basketball, cross country, fencing, and cycling.
How can my child become an SCS student?
Any student who is a resident of Durham County is eligible to apply to SCS. Students are placed through a lottery process. Transfer applications are considered if all lottery applications have been exhausted and seats are still available. No students are placed after June 30th prior to the start of the school year. Transportation is provided for every student regardless of location within Durham County. Morning transportation is through express stops and families must provide transportation to the express stop. Only afternoon transportation is provided to neighborhood stops.
SCS serves students in grades 6-12. Enrollment is limited to 100 students per grade.
The magnet application window is in January every year. The application must be completed online through the DPS magnet website: http://magnet.dpsnc.net/How do I find out more about the school?
Join us for the yearly DPS Magnet Fair, our information sessions at SCS and at parent nights at your current school.
