Hours for Students: 8:30 a.m. to 3:20 p.mSCS is both a calendar magnet and a theme magnet. We operate on a year round schedule. Our school vision is: Creativity. Communication. Collaboration. Community. Our theme centers on applied creativity, media, design, and communication arts. The program of study features coursework selections including Digital Media & Design, Video Technology & Communications, Engineering, Theater Arts, Computer Programming, Music & Audio Production, Visual Arts, Healthful Living/Outdoor Education, and Spanish.
As a small magnet school, we do not offer competitive NCHSAA sports. However, we offer several club teams (including soccer and basketball) and unique extracurricular clubs.
How can my child become an SCS student?
Any student who is a resident of Durham County is eligible to apply to SCS. Students are placed solely through a lottery process.
SCS serves students in grades 6-12. Enrollment is limited to 100 students per grade. No students are placed after June 30th prior to the start of the school year.
The magnet application window opens during January of the year. Information about the next enrollment period can be found by visiting the Durham Public Schools Magnet Schools Website.What about Transportation?
Transportation is provided for every student regardless of location within Durham County. Morning transportation is through express stop and afternoon transportation to neighborhood stops.
How do I find out more about the school?
Join us for the DPS Magnet Fair held in November.
Take a school tour.
School tours are offered regularly during November through January while school is in session. Please check our tour schedule and use the Google Form link to reserve a tour or call Beth Rhodes at 919.560.3535. We cannot accommodate unscheduled tours and unaccompanied visitors are not allowed in the building during school hours.
What about sports?
The School for Creative Studies does not offer traditional competitive sports. Students enrolled at SCS may be eligible to participate in competitive sports at their base school; however, transportation from SCS to the base school is not provided by Durham Public School.
