Redistricting Study

  • Durham Public Schools is a changing school district in a changing county, but attendance areas for our schools have not changed system-wide since the city and county districts merged in 1992. In 2011, the DPS Board of Education adopted a guiding principle for student assignment that suggests taking action if enrollment at a school drops below 85 percent of building capacity. Now, six years later, 11 schools are below that threshold while nine schools are beyond 105 percent.

    We are beginning a redistricting study to begin the process of determining how we can best serve all of our students efficiently and with equity in providing strong public schools.

    DPS’s first step is a request for public input on updating the school board’s guiding principles for redistricting, which you can leave on this website. As the process continues, we will update this page with new presentations and support material. There will be community meetings and important discussions about what we want—as families, educators and citizens—for all of Durham’s students and schools, and how we can best support that through redistricting.

    Durham Public Schools has decided to extend the redistricting study of school attendance areas. As a result, the public input meetings originally scheduled for Tuesday, May 9, and Thursday, May 18, have been postponed until next school year. As a reminder, DPS is not considering any school assignment changes for the 2017-18 school year.
