Philosophy
The newest choice in middle schools is W.G. Pearson Magnet Middle, which combines a focus on the arts with a concentration on nurturing the gifts and talents of its students. W.G. Pearson Middle opened in the fall of 2007 in the newly renovated historic former W.G. Pearson Elementary building, near the campus of North Carolina Central University. We offer a small middle school setting, with a maximum enrollment of 350 students. This close community of students, teachers, and staff provides an ideal environment for students to explore their interests and grow academically and socially.
Teaching
The goal of the instructional program at W.G. Pearson is to increase student achievement across the curriculum. Our core curriculum is taught by teams of teachers, who collaborate to provide the highest quality instruction and work with parents, administrators, and counselors to make sure every child succeeds. Teachers also collaborate to insure that technology and information skills are integrated across the curriculum and that we meet the needs of 21st century learners.
W.G. Pearson also offers strong programs in the humanities, such as visual arts, drama, piano, and orchestra, allowing our students to explore and succeed in a wide variety of fields. We provide many opportunities for student performances where our students can demonstrate their visual and performing arts skills. We have partnerships with the Durham arts community, which expose our students to a wide variety of arts and make them aware of career opportunities as visual and performing artists. We also offer a broad selection of exploratory electives and extracurricular activities, such as Science Decathlon, Art Club, Battle of the Books, MSEN, Journalism, and Robotics.
Services for Academically/Intellectually Gifted Students
W. G. Pearson Magnet Middle School’s Academically/Intellectually Gifted students are provided with an array of services to nurture and develop their intellectual capabilities. In a small setting, we seek to hone their higher order thinking skills by integrating a cross-curricular discipline. Our Advanced Learners receive academic rigor through the William and Mary Curriculum and through the differentiated learning available from the Renzulli Learning program.
