Philosophy
The Shepard family believes the balanced development of a child requires the commitment and active involvement of the entire school community to foster lifelong learning. Our school public includes students, parents, educators, administrators, surrounding universities, local businesses, and community volunteers. The school family believes all students can and must achieve. When the community-at -large invests energies in the education and improvement of children, the positive results can be extraordinary. The efficacy of any school depends on the level of commitment and caring embodied in the members of the total school community.
Our mission is to provide a premiere educational environment where all students acquire knowledge, skills, and values necessary to live enriched lives as productive members in a global community. Our goal is to support an integrated studies program, centered on our magnet themes--forensics and law related education, technology, and foreign languages. In response to the unique and changing needs of students in the young adolescent stages of development, Shepard Magnet Middle School students will be challenged to question, explore, achieve, succeed, belong, participate, and think analytically. We are committed to creating a school environment that responds to the academic, social, and personal needs of our children. Commitment, Academics, Responsibility, and Excellence (CARE) summarize our focus.
Teaching
Our objectives are to improve student achievement, to provide innovative programming extending the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, and to celebrate diversity through our international focus. As an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP), Shepard offers a rigorous academic curriculum for grades 6-8 to challenge students to prepare themselves for advanced intellectual pursuits on the high school and collegiate level, combined with active and responsible citizenship. Successful achievement in the academically rich environment prepares students for continuation of the IB Middle Years Programme in grades 9 and 10 offered at Hillside High School. Completion of the program provides a solid preparation for students planning to enter the IB Diploma program for grades 11 and 12 (also offered at Hillside High School). The magnet themes are law and forensics, technology, and foreign languages.
In the Middle Years Programme at Shepard, there are eight core subject areas which are taught against a background of five areas of interaction. The core subjects are: language arts, foreign languages (German, French, and Spanish), humanities, science, math, technology, arts, physical education, and forensics, and law-related education. The areas of interaction are: approaches to learning, community service, health and social education, environment, and Homo Faber (man the creator and inventive genius improving the quality of life). The law-related curriculum component of the program is enhanced by an authentic high-tech moot courtroom.
The focus is power through knowledge of the democratic process; justice through understanding of the judiciary process; mock trials, debates, and public speaking; and cooperative programs with the NCCU, Duke, and UNC Chapel Hill Law Schools.
