Philosophy
We at John W. Neal Middle work from the premise that in order for children to achieve academically, they must be in a positive climate that fosters total child development. We believe the adults in the lives of the children must work together in order to ensure that the kids succeed. Parents and teachers must develop strong positive relationships with one another. Teachers must forge strong bonds with students so the child knows the adult truly has their best interests in mind.
Teaching
We demand academic excellence and accomplish this by hiring a highly competent and creative cadre of teachers. Our teachers conduct a daily Reading Apprenticeship Seminar to help all students improve their literacy skills. Reading Apprenticeship is grounded in the view that learning is a social-cognitive interactive process. In this view, based on the work of Russian psychologist L.S. Vygotsky, children's cognitive development is seen as "socially mediated."
Neal is a site school for the federal 21st Century After-school Community Learning Center. This program provides exciting and effective enrichment for participating students. Neal also is a pilot school for the DPS Pre-College partnership with North Carolina Central University. Seventh and 8th grade students participate in rigorous courses to prepare them for advanced level work in high school.

The academically/intellectually gifted students program offers AIG services for qualifying language arts students. Additionally, highly proficient mathematics students are offered advanced and integrated math.
